Xiaomi 15 models will receive a new type of fingerprint reader mounted under the display.
Flagship phones manufactured by Xiaomi have been equipped with in-display fingerprint scanners for years, all of which are based on optical sensors and still are to this day. The same applies to OnePlus, which is considered one of the company's biggest competitors. According to recent news, both manufacturers will be dropping optical biometric sensors next year, replacing them with ultrasonic solutions in the case of Xiaomi 15 and OnePlus 13.
The information comes from the largest Chinese social media platform, Weibo, where two separate sources have confirmed that Xiaomi is currently testing ultrasonic fingerprint reader modules for the flagship models with the number 15. The development of these models is reportedly in full swing behind the scenes. The Xiaomi 15 is said to retain the flat design of its predecessors' screens, but the Ultra model's display will be covered with curved glass.
OnePlus is planning to switch to ultrasonic biometric sensors with its 13 flagship model, putting the device in the same league as Samsung's flagship phones or Vivo's premium smartphones. Manufacturers who use under-display ultrasonic fingerprint readers typically justify their decision by stating that this technology enables faster and more accurate operation.
The mobile phones in question may debut in China towards the end of the year, and internationally in early 2025. Accordingly, their development is still in the early stages, meaning nothing is set in stone yet, companies can change specifications and hardware components at any time. However, if they stick to the plan, there will be even more devices on the market with fingerprint readers under ultrasonic displays.
